Environmental and Racial Justice

The story of Centreville is one of both environmental and racial injustice. It is no coincidence that Centreville is a city that is largely impoverished and 98% Black. Poor communities of color living in unsanitary, unhealthy, and hazardous conditions have been continually neglected by the government, from Warren County to Flint to the Dakota Access Pipeline. Two national environmental nonprofits—National Resources Defense Council and Earthjustice—are assisting Equity Legal Services and Equal Housing and Opportunity Council in providing legal assistance to the residents of Centreville. They’re committed to bringing Centreville into the nationwide fight against environmental racism.
